Why I Teach...
My name is Ximena Navarrete. This is my 2nd year teaching. I share a contract with another teacher at Tuscany Hills Elementary School where I have been teaching Transitional Kindergarten for the last two years. I love teaching all different subjects to my little friends! It is easy to find the "joy factor" when working with 5 year olds because they see every opportunity to learn as FUN.
I teach because I love children. Children have a way of helping you forget EVERYTHING going on in your life and drawing all your attention on them, ESPECIALLY in Transitional Kindergarten. The moment my students step into my classroom the outside world does not exist to me. This is something I've noticed especially this year as my personal life has been an emotional rollercoaster. Most of the students I have met in the last 5 years of my teaching career have had a sweetness about them. They are caring, loving, and they want to see others do well including their teacher. Before I became a teacher, I worked in retail for 10 years and in those ten years my worst day as a teacher does not beat my best day as a retail manager and I owe that to the people I work with...THE KIDS!
I teach because I feel called by God to do so. Ever since I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. When finding a job after college wasn't as easy as I anticipated, I knew I couldn't give up; I needed to continue to pursue this calling because the reward would be far greater than the trouble it took to achieve it (Romans 8:18- I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.) Although I cannot talk about God at school, I know I can be an example of God's love to my students. I believe that God gives us all special gifts and talents and by using the gift of teaching He has given me, I am glorifying Him.
I teach because it's FUN! Sometimes, at the end of the school day, I ask myself, "Did I just get paid to have fun all day?" Of course, this job comes with A LOT of stresses and I'd be lying if I said everyday was FUN but in my class we love to laugh and learn and that's all good with me. With science experiments, fun books, and lots of engaging centers I find teaching ANYTHING but boring. Everyday is new, every year has been different, students are always changing, there are new challenges and obstacles each day and there are always new accomplishments for me and my students. Teaching keeps me on my toes!
